The Pier at Avon, NC

After I chatted with the guy in charge of the pier, he didn't charge me to walk on it because, as he said, "You won't stay long."

It was the most crooked (in two dimensions) pier I've ever been on. And so cold that the few folks fishing were wearing snow suits!

These were some of the biggest waves I'd seen on the Atlantic coast.

It occurred to me that, if I fell in, I might not make it to shore.

How's this for power?

I felt much safer being under the pier than on it :-)

Piers are such surprises.

The rest of these are the shots taken by every beach walker with a camera.

The linear and the stable, against the changing curves.

The ocean shows its power best when it has something to push against.

And if you're lucky, there's the added element of shadow.

Yep, the new photographer in me gives thanks to the piers.
