- My last New England weekend dance
When I heard about this dance, with the Groovemongers for music, Lisa Greenleaf to call -- how could I resist?
This was a gender role free dance, sponsored by Lavender Country and Folk Dancers.
It was a good size: maybe 140 dancers, most really good and a few newer folks just to keep us honest.
I felt quite welcome and quickly adjusted to the "bands" and "bare-arms" vocabulary that replaces "men" and "women".
And kudos to Lisa: she only "goofed" once, for which the crowd gave her good-natured ribbing.
The dancing was mostly contra, which makes me happy, but I also learned to do the two-step (very cool)
and continued to work on my waltzing techniques.
The location (at Camp Chimney Rock in Becket, Massachusetts) was lovely. We got rained on a bit, and it was cold, but with full service dorms (heat, electricity, showers - even
small kitchens), that was barely a problem. The food was good, especially the apple crisp on Saturday night!
Here are a few photos. Someone was taking lots of photos which I hope to find online... someday...
- New York City: wow!
-
I got to Peg's place in Great Neck in the early evening on Sunday and had time to wash clothes, take a walk through the neighborhood, and have some great home-made soup
before enjoying a long happy sleep.
- On Monday we took the LIRR into The City to see the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is only open to volunteers and their friends.
Lucky for me, Peg has such a friend! It was absolutely incredible to be in a space full of beautiful (and famous) art - and almost no people.
No photos were allowed in the Museum, of course, but here are some photos shot throughout the day.
We had a fantastic lunch in the employee cafeteria, then walked through Central Park on our way to have tea and scones at Alice's Tea Shop.
I had fun taking photos, of the lillies in a fountain, the details in concrete.
- Tuesday we went into the city again, walking in Greenwich Village (where Peg and Hal lived in the pre-children stage of life)
then eating at a lovely French Restaurant before going to a Broadway Show called The 39 Steps, which followed the plot of that
Hitchcock move pretty closely, but had added references to lots of his other movies. Very clever stage set too. It was really rainy and kind of cold,
so I didn't get many photos.
- Wednesday was a day of rest :-)
- Thursday was another great day in The City. We took the train in again, but this time it was nicer weather so we walked in Greenwich Village,
eat dinner at the ultimate New York deli (The Carneige) then went to see the classic show The Fantasticks. It really was the perfect
New York City experience: thanks Peg!
- Friday morning I got on the road to Pennsylvania.
