Thursday I drove from Maine back to Concord Massachusetts... and I failed to resist one last (really, this time) photo op on the foliage.
- I had a very nice walk around Walden Pond, remembering being there with my daughters when they were wee ones, and, before their arrival, using a
rope swing at the far end of the pond. It's quite different now, with a fenced walking trail at the edge of the pond - but periodically there are stone steps leading to the water. Even though it was maybe 65 degrees,
several people were enjoying the water. Here are lots and lots of photos... two pages of them, in fact, so if you look, notice that the way to page 2 is at the top of page 1.
I couldn't resist. It was, like, the perfect day.
- The dance at Concord was great. The band is a young, rather experimental group called Giant Robot Dance (two sets of brothers, plus one room mate). For most dances, they started out
with a recognizable contra tune, but then morphed into some also recognizable rock song. The full drum set must make it difficult for sound folks to balance the mics, but Dan did a great job.
Lisa Greenleaf called, and the floor was, as always, strong and energetic and just lovely to dance with. It was like saying goodbye to TCD, for me to say goodbye to that dance community.
- I stayed in Needham, MA after the dance, with my friend Dave, who got in even later than I did since he and his son had gone to THE Red Sox game - you know, the one where the Sox
were down by 7 in the 7th inning and came back to win it in the 9th. Wow.
- Friday
- I spent the morning on camper rehab, then drove back to Concord to visit the Free Library. It's a really nice space, with free computer use, and it felt like the right
place for me to fill out my absentee ballot (witnessed by two librarians!). I walked to the Post Office to mail the ballot, and got sucked into walking through a large old bookstore
there in the middle of town. On a whim, I asked if they had a book that a friend had recommended (Winter's Tale by Mark Helprin) -- and they did! So I will long
associate that book with voting, and Concord, and autumn in New England.
- I had a nice sandwich at the Concord Market, then headed west, into the sunset (gorgeous) to dance at Greenfield. And to my surprise (since I hadn't done
my research), there was the Giant Robot Dance again! They were less successful at this dance, maybe because of a less experienced caller, maybe because the dancers
were less interested in the alternate music - or maybe it was just me, not feeling well (I think the breakfast I made from leftover fridge food might have been a mistake).
But I left at half-time, wanting to be feeling well for Saturday's event.
- And Saturday: Peterborough's Fall Ball, a noon to midnight affair with incredible music and callers for the entire time. Wow. Photos... are in Week 19 since (as I
just remembered), I'm now putting weekends at the front of a week...
