The Lake George Escape campground is a little strange: very few people, and most "attractions" are closed, since they are designed for
summer-time. But the bath and laundry rooms are clean and nearby, and I can get to the web from two places (though
both are outdoors, so I'm re-learning about dressing in layers). My cell phone only works if I pay for "roaming", so
I'm looking forward to getting back to where I can phone home.
- Monday was spent washing clothes and buying groceries and resting.
- Tuesday morning I found out that my reservations for next week were screwy so I wasted the morning on that.
Then, in need of fresh air, I found what I thought was be a nice easy hike - but it turned out to be very steep and I hadn't
thought ahead about when it was going to get dark, so I stopped before I got to the top. Still, the Prospect Mountain hike
was good exercise and successfully cleared my spleen.
- Wednesday morning I got the manager at the camp ground to fix my reservations (much more effective than phone calls)
but it required me to move to a new site, and after that I decided to just hang around the campground. I walked all the trails in my big new hiking boots
(they're good but need a little more breaking in) and finished reading one book (by Joseph Hellerman: good but not great) and started a new book
(Lonesome Dove by Larry MacMurtry which I can already tell, 50 pages in, will be great)
and working cryptic crosswords. Relaxing day.
- By Thursday I was in need of more exercise, but didn't want to risk my knees on real steep stuff, so I
did a quick visit to Fort William Henry, then strolled the streets of
Lake George Village, and along the water front. I lucked into an old railroad bed that had been converted into a bike trail, so took a long
walk there, getting lots of photos, some pretty darn nice.
- Now it's Friday, and I've packed up my camper and am sitting in a deserted outdoor cafe (at the campgrounds) where I can get web
access, and loading up this page... hence the present tense :-) As soon as I can remember where in the camper I stored my umbrella, I'll walk down
to the laundry room to wash dishes and change clothes, then head to Silver Bay YMCA camp for my first
Adirondack Dance Weekend. It's fortunate that I'll be indoors for the weekend,
since the rain is scheduled to continue...
