From Tucson to Phoenix
February 8 through 14

    • Near Tucson, AZ:
    • North of Phoenix, AZ:
      • The Verde Valley Thousand Trails Camp Ground was pretty remote: several miles off the main road. I like that: quiet and good star gazing. This one was plunk in the middle of cattle country, so it was surrounded by a serious fence - which got me in trouble one day when I decided to hike around the park. Not realizing that I'd gotten "outside the fence", I ended up having to follow the fence for a couple of miles to get back to the front gate. Along the way I discovered a small winery and lots of cacti!
      • Hiking: I drove to Sedona to get info on hiking in the mountains and had the fun of seeing a flyer announcing a contra dance, with one of my favorite callers (Diane Silver). I told the ranger that he really ought to go, and he said that of course he would go: "Diane had come by to get hiking directions too, and seemed like a really nice gal." Unfortunately for me, I'd already committed to dancing elsewhere that weekend, so I missed her.
The directions turned out not to be all that helpful, since the trailheads were so poorly marked. I ended up doing three small hikes. The first little walk was just poking around near a pull-over site. The second hike was longer. I found the trailhead by asking enough people: it was hidden behind the high school! Finally I realized that folks just pulled off the road anywhere and started hiking, so I picked a place and took a walk along a creek.
      • Some of my favorite stops are libraries. The Sedona Library was great, including a quilt show.
