For Valentines' Day?

I asked one of the many "maintenance" folks about this patterned sand around some of the flowers. He said it wasn't them - that some local guy came by at dawn each day and worked in some pattern. He said it was an important part of his day, to see what there was to see when he got in.

I only saw one planting of these pretty little flowers...

I *think* they're called something like "gloxinia"...

... but I could easily be wrong. I find it hard to capture the reds...
