Merced Grove Trail, Yosemite, 11 June 2009

Yosemite does a nice job with signage.

I really appreciate information about trail length and difficulty... although I find they overrate them both. Or maybe I'm in better shape than the average visitor?

It was fun to know a little bit of the history, so I could imagine a stage coach on this path.

This guy had been eating grass from under a fallen log but ran uphill when he heard me.

My patience was rewarded when he returned to eating, then poked his head around the log.

Cute cabin to happen across.

I decided I had time to go all the way to "Twin Bridges" but...

... turned around here rather than cross and then hike on with wet shoes.

This is a common sight: one tree "holding up" another in a seemingly purposeful manner.

Salt and pepper?

The living and the dead.

What killed this tree? Fire? Bugs? Old age?

Two trees had recently fallen from the edge of the path leaving deep holes and interesting root balls.

This tree fell exactly along the path. It seemed that the bark exploded off from the impact.
