I decided I was up to a strenuous hike and picked the "Four Mile Trail", which is actually 4.6 miles uphill from the floor of Yosemite Valley to Glacier Point. It took me 3 hours to go up but only 2 to come down. Since taking photos meant I could stop a moment, I took lots of 'em.
After I got down from the hike, I drove into the Village Store to get groceries, and was happy to find good veggies. I resisted the urge to spend money on dinner and headed on "home" around 7 PM, tired but happy. About a mile from the exit, I heard a strange noise but before I could get too worried it stopped, so I went on out... and in about 2 miles, the red oil light started to blink. I pulled off immediately and popped the hood to find some smoke and no coolant in the reserve tank, but lots of it on the pavement. Just as I flipped open my cell phone and discovered I had no signal, a van pulled up on the far side of the road. "Our daughter recognized you from the campground - can we help?" Whew. With their help, I got AAA to tow me. It was 10 PM before I got that dinner and hot shower, but it sure could've been worse! Monday was spent finding someone wiling to work on a VW Eurovan and then getting towed the 75 miles into Medesto. (My RV insurance paid the tow charges :-). I stayed in a Vagabond Inn and worked out at the nearby health club and watched TV (strange stuff out there these days...) and was happy to get back to my campground by dinner time on Wednesday, a thousand dollars poorer but with a new water pump and thermostat and confidence that the camper is ready for the upcoming cross country trip. |
