I asked the folks at the Bend/Sunriver Thousand Trails campground for hiking ideas in the area, and they gave me a little map that showed several possibilities. The first two I tried were lava caves, but they were closed on Mondays and Tuesdays! So I drove down to Benham Falls on the Deschutes River and really enjoyed it: a beautiful pond, lovely rapids and then the top of the falls themselves, where there was a walk along the river.

It was one of those days when being outside was exactly what I wanted to be doing, and I was acutely happy about my decision to be on this trip.
